The latest sampler quilt from Hird (The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt) draws its inspiration from Bible passages, which are quoted extensively throughout this book and occasionally referenced in the blocks themselves. As with Hird's other sampler quilt collections, this work is comprised of 96 individual six-inch blocks that can be mixed, matched, and combined into a setting of the quilter's choice. Piecing ranges from simple patchwork to complex piecing, and both rotary-cutting and paper-piecing templates are included on the CD. VERDICT Hird's latest lacks the wide appeal of her earlier collections, and some of the blocks are a little heavy-handed in their symbolism, but Christian crafters interested in combining faith with quilting will rejoice.
