Overview

They're joyful, they're mischievous, they're full of life and wonder--they're babies! On their very best behavior or their very worst, you'll find it all in The Big Book of Babies, a 384-page collection of more than 230 black-and-white photographs--printed in duotone--that capture the wonder and excitement of babies' first years. The expressions of amazement that come from discovering their new surroundings, the incredible messes they can get themselves into, their irresistable habit of falling asleep in the unlikeliest of places--these are but a few of the reasons babies entertain, delight, and fascinate. From laughter, to tears, to trouble of all sorts, The Big Book of Babies is sure to bring a smile to your face. The images are complemented by J.C.'s own whimsical drawings, and by hilarious stories, touching moments, and excerpts and quotes from the works of such diverse and classic writers as Louise Erdrich, Mark Twain, Carl Sandburg, Walt Whitman, and more. The result is a rich source of joy and entertainment for parents-to-be, new parents, empty nesters, grandparents, and siblings to share.

Babies and why we love them so
Perhaps you have a teenager who's behaving like one. Or possibly your 9-year-old daughter is insisting all her friends do so go out on group dates. And yesterday, your still tousled-headed 6-year-old boy refused to take your hand in public.

How did you get here? As Mother's Day approaches, you can't do better than to be reminded of the small package that once nestled against your chest and smelled so sweet. That can certainly be had from "The Big Book of Babies" (Welcome Books, $24.95).

In fact, baby smell almost wafts off the pages. Editor J.C. Suares chose his pictures well - 230 of them. There's the always adorable shot of an infant yawning, a baby squished into the infant bathtub and one asleep in the highchair. Classics all.

Then there's young Princess Elizabeth lovingly gazing down at Prince Charles in a draped bassinet. Elvis and Priscilla Presley hold their darlin' Lisa Marie close, Priscilla's bouffant almost taller than her baby. Is that Mother Teresa nuzzling a wee one?

If, to your mind, there's nothing in nature cuter than a toddler's naked bum on the run from an approaching diaper, or the wizened brow of an infant seemingly deeply perplexed, then you need this book. If, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A child is a curly, dimpled lunatic," then they're our kind of crazy, dimples, curls and all.
