Overview

Renowned paleontologist Robert T. Bakker and award-winning paleoartist Luis V. Rey combine forces in this oversized picture book about the evolution of dinosaurs. From the conquest of land by dino ancestor Acanthostega during the Devonian Period, through the mass die-off of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period, Bakker and Rey take readers on a safari through time while paying subtle homage to the 1960 Giant Golden Book Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Reptiles that inspired them both as young dinophiles. With stops along the way to look at monster bugs, ferocious fin-backs, fluffy dinosaurs, sea monsters and the 12-year-old girl who discovered them, dinosaur orchestras, tickling tyrannosaurs, and much, much more, this is a journey readers will never forget. It's a perfect gift for young dinosaur lovers—as well as adult fans of Dr. Bakker and Luis Rey!

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
(++++) "Bakker does a fine job of connecting prehistory with young children’s world today, by showing how mammals evolved during the age of dinosaurs and then began to dominate the world after dinosaurs were gone—thus explaining how “the dinosaur story is really our story, too.” The Big Golden Book of Dinosaurs tackles a large and complex subject in clear, understandable form, and hopefully will serve as an introduction for yet another generation of young people to prehistoric creatures that continue to fascinate so many of us today.  —INFODAD.COM, 10/31/2013
Children's Literature - Denise Daley
This oversized book contains illustrations that are so vibrant and life-like, you almost expect the dinosaurs to jump out at you. This, combined with the narrative text, makes this book appealing to educators as well as children. The inside cover contains a map of the world with images showing where Triassic and Jurassic period dinosaur fossils have been found. The table of contents lists thirteen chapters including chapters on dinosaurs of particular periods such as the late Triassic period and the late Jurassic period. Additional chapters contain information about fluffy dinosaurs, dinosaurs in the snow, dinosaurs of the sand dunes, and others. At the back of the book there is a detailed index and a guide to pronunciation. Inside the back cover is a map of the world that shows where dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous period have been found. All in all, this is an attractive and informative book that will support common core expectations and supplement elementary science units. Reviewer: Denise Daley

The big ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex covered in hot pink feathers rushes up to attack the triceratops that has purple feathers sticking out at right angles all over his body. Impossible? No, it's possible according to Dr. Robert T. Bakker, a renowned paleontologist and Curator of Paleontology at Houston's Museum of Natural Science. He, along with Luis V. Rey, a noted paleontology artist, lay out their reasons for believing dinosaurs are covered with feathers. After all, haven't we now decided dinosaurs are more closely related to birds and not reptiles?… Although the author states this is for ages 3 — 7, the readability level is much higher. Young children who are dinosaur fanatics would thoroughly enjoy having the book read to them. Older students would enjoy reading the book by themselves…The author provides many great comparisons which makes difficult concepts understandable…I highly recommend this book. Even those pre—readers who like dinosaurs would love to look at the pictures and explore their favorite critters. (02/11/14)
