Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Spending time with Aunt Sue is her niece's favorite pastime. And no wonder, with such adventures in store. Hopping in the big tan van for to a trip to Aunt Sue's special clothing store, a sports depot, the park and the zoo makes for a wild and wacky ride. This reader is formatted as a paired reading experience for an adult and a child. On the left page is the more complex text. New vocabulary, rhyming sequences and more text appear on that side. The opposite page has a much simpler sentence or two, using words that most first-graders are comfortable with. It even has a symbol on each page to help the readers remember whose turn it is. The big circle smiles for the adult reader, the small for the child. Instant success and a fun read. 2001, Treasure Bay, Ages 5 to 6.

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
This book, from the "We Both Read" series, offers a fairly novel way of presenting an early reader. Text on the left-hand page of each spread is written in smaller print, with several sentences per page, and includes a somewhat challenging—for the beginning reader—vocabulary, designed for an adult to read. The right-hand page offers one sentence of simple text in large, clear print for the child to read, in turn. Colorful, silly, cartoon-like illustrations appear on both pages. The text rhymes, with a jaunty beat that will help provide clues to more challenging words and will also expose young readers to the important concept of word families. Children will also get to enjoy a more complex story by having the adults read part, but will not be faced with the daunting task of having to read the harder text themselves until they are ready. There is no particular plot, and the direction of the story seems more driven by which words might rhyme than any concern with making sense, but the silliness is sustained and should amuse young, and now successful readers. This is an excellent addition to early reader collections that will provide lots of positive reinforcement for the newest beginning readers.
