The Biggest Fish in the Lake

Overview

A young girl and her grandfather love spending time together fishing on the farm -- talking, sharing stories or just listening to the wind as they wait for a bite. For her birthday, Grandpa gives her a brand-new fishing rod. And now, at the very beginning of bass season, they're off to the lake for her first grown-up fishing trip. She can't wait to catch a fish all by herself -- maybe even the biggest fish in the lake! This lyrical tale celebrates nature, the bonds of loving, intergenerational relationships, and ...

Booklist
? children will like this, too, for the exciting story line, the well-developed characters, and the superb nature scenery.
Children's Literature
The young protagonist in this charming picture book loves to fish with her Grandpa. Grandpa loves to fish all year round. He teaches his eager granddaughter how to catch speckled trout from the stream in springtime. In summer, they fish for catfish in the pond. Walleye is the treasure from the river when leaves begin to fall. Beneath the thick ice of the lake lurk the prize trout of winter waiting to be caught by hardy fishermen. The best day of all comes when Grandpa buys the young fisherman her own casting rod for her birthday. Over and over she practices casting until she can hit the practice tire two out of three times. Finally, the day of the big fishing trip arrives. After a whole day on the lake, only Grandpa is lucky. The next morning the young fisherman hurries to the dock alone, and soon she hooks the catch of a lifetime. Young readers will appreciate this story that celebrates the special bond between the older and younger generation, while brilliant watercolor illustrations capture the beauty of the natural world. 2001, Kids Can Press, $15.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Sue Reichard

Gr 1-4-A quiet, gentle story that celebrates the special bond between a grandfather and his granddaughter who share a love of fishing throughout the seasons. During a summer fishing trip, the child explains, Grandpa has luck, but all she catches are weeds. Then she sets out alone one morning and catches a big one, but realizes she must free it. Readers are sure to be drawn in by the wonderfully flowing text and the soft watercolor illustrations of the scenery and the natural life that surround the two as they enjoy their special relationship.-Sheryl L.
