Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
Computer pioneer and philanthropist Bill Gates' life story is told in manga-style graphic novel format. Part of the "Great Heroes" series of graphic biographies, the book begins with Gates accepting an honorary degree (presumably from Harvard, although it is not stated in the book) thirty-two years after he dropped out of the university, and pledging to donate virtually all of his vast wealth to charity. The book then goes back to Gates' childhood and chronicles his fascination with, and successful mastery of, all things computer. At the end of each chapter, the author offers a page of supplemental information called "The Key to Bill Gates' Success." This ranges from an explanation of the differences between MS-DOS and Windows to descriptions of Gates' friends and co-workers. The information about Gates and the explanations of the different kinds of computer software, hardware, and programming languages are explained clearly and succinctly, and Gates' life story is told in an engaging manner. However, the manga illustration style is very jarring: the characters' eye-popping, teeth-gnashing, jaw-unhinging reactions seem inappropriate when the narrative is relating Gates' business history. The text is also stilted, with grammar errors and awkward phrasing. Young manga fans will likely enjoy the illustration style; other readers may be inspired by the story of a high-school dropout who becomes one of the most successful—and richest—man in the world due to smarts, hard work, and forward thinking.
