Excerpt:

“I value gratitude. Tell me, Laura, is there anything you actually feel grateful for?”

I’d feel pretty grateful if you bent me over the desk and gave me a good screw, I thought, but I couldn’t say it. Not with Mr. Price acting like this.

“Plenty,” I said, a little too defensively.

“Good.” He lifted the decanter to his lips. “Everyone should be grateful for something. I’m not one for modesty myself, but gratitude can be humbling, and everyone deserves to be humbled every now and then.”

What was he getting at? I was completely confused and unsure if I’d just messed up my plan to seduce him beyond repair. It would be just my bad luck that he fired me instead of fucking me.

When I said nothing, Mr. Price continued. “I appreciate your efforts up until now, Laura, I really do.” He spoke in the tone he might use in a business meeting. “But that was a little selfish, don’t you think?”

“I...guess so.”

“No.” He wagged his finger at me. “Don’t guess. It’s a yes or no question.”

I nodded weakly. “Yes. Yes, it was selfish. I’m sorry.” To my horror, I realized that I was being sincere. Without even realizing it, I had come to agree with him and was genuinely sorry. What had he done to me?

“I’m afraid you’ll have to pay for that.”

Another nod. “Yes, sir. If you’ll just tell me the store...”

He laughed. “Sorry, love. It doesn’t work that way. One, it came from an associate in India, and I doubt you’re really willing to go all that way for your own punishment. Two, I think you’ll agree that we pay you very well, but trust me, you can’t afford a replica of that one. And three, I don’t want you to pay in money.”

Did he mean...? Oh God, he did, didn’t he? I could have clapped for joy, but his cold green eyes warned me not to make a move, not to show anything but solemn humility.

“Now, Laura.” He leaned back against the wall casually. “Take off your skirt.”
