Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Part of the 'How Did That Get Here?' series, this book details the history of chocolate from its earliest beginnings to the modern chocolate bar. Divided into thirteen chapters, this thirty-two page book introduces readers to the discovery of chocolate and how the cacao bean was first used to make a chocolate drink for Mayan royalty. As more countries discovered the delicious properties of the cacao bean, the price of the treat decreased and was enjoyed by more than just royalty. Several chapters cover the enslavement of cacao plantation workers in the 1800s, and the mistreatment and small pay of today's workers. The author takes readers to West Africa's Ivory Coast where children were harvesting cacao as recently as the 1980s. This book is a thorough presentation of the history of chocolate, including fun and interesting topics such as how the chocolate chip cookie was invented, to more serious subjects such as the disappearing rain forests and how this is affecting the production of chocolate. Photographs, maps, paintings, and antique posters bring the text to life and will engage readers even more. 2006, Crabtree Publishing Company, and Ages 8 to 12.
