Children's LiteraturePart of the "How Did That Get Here?" series, this book will introduce readers to the history, science, and production of rubber. Like the other biographies in this series, there are thirty-two pages filled with diagrams, historical photographs and posters; maps; and fun facts about the topic. Several chapters focus on the effort of other countries to produce rubber of their own instead of importing it from tropical locations like South America and parts of Africa. Some countries were reduced to stealing seeds from the strictly guarded rubber trees in Amazonia, while others focused their efforts on science, developing a synthetic rubber to replace the expensive natural rubber. This book touches upon several topics that would be pertinent in the classroom, such as slavery and working conditions for rubber tappers, the invention of synthetic rubber, and the evolution of the rubber tire, as well as recycling and protecting the environment. 2006, Crabtree Publishing Company, and Ages 8 to 12.
