Part of the �How Did That Get Here?� series which includes titles from bananas and chocolate to wheat and vanilla, this handsome 32-page book is chock full of color photographs that enhance and expand the text, giving it reach way beyond the middle-grade reader who is its target audience. Chapters are short and cover topics including where tomatoes are grown (who would have guessed Iran?), the history of tomatoes, and the business of tomatoes, including their growth, their harvesting, their uses, pests, and diseases. This book also touches on the future of tomatoes, with a brief mention of GMO brands. The major shortcoming of the book--and of the series--is its lack of a pronunciation guide either in the body of the book or in the glossary. This leaves most students grasping for some way to deal with terms scattered throughout the text, including here lycopene, determinate, locules, xtomatil, chinampas, apoplexy, dyspepsia, cholera, ethylene, and verticillium. The content of the book is appropriate for middle school and high school, and it certainly does not speak down to young adults in agricultural studies, although older readers may skip this title--and perhaps even the whole series--as being �too babyish.� If you are doing a Reading Fair, this would be a great title to feature with a display of all kinds of tomatoes (assuming availability, of course).
