Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Written on a sixth-grade level, this is an excellent choice for early middle school children who are doing reports. The text is interesting, and the pictures are colorful and plentiful. The illustrations are varied, with some being photographs, some realistic drawings and some graphic representations. The book is clearly organized, giving historical details as well as modern-day information. It is interesting to learn that the term “Luddites” came from a group of weavers in England who destroyed mechanical looms because they feared they would lose their livelihood. The text includes a table of contents, a glossary and an index. No information is given on sources the author used to determine the facts given, but the information does appear to be authentic. Interspersed throughout are interesting bits of information on wool, sheep and the making of wool products. This is part of a series of non-fiction books based on “biographies” of inanimate objects, published by Crabtree Publishing Company, a company that specializes in nonfiction. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D’Arezzo
