Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``This full-blooded chronicle maps the troubled centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, when poetic, inventive Celts and pragmatic Romans merged with tough Franks on the Christian soil that became medieval France,'' observed PW. (Mar.)
Library Journal
The general reader interested in early French history will enjoy this well-written and generally informed account, if he or she is not overwhelmed by the enormous detail. The author traces the development of Frankish kingship from the imperfect Christianization of Clovis and his sons down to the accession of Charlemagne. Although Scherman is familiar with the primary sources of this brutal period, the text seems to be based primarily on secondary works that do not reflect recent trends in historical research. Still, this is a rare appreciation of the literary, artistic, architectural, and musical aspects of the culture. Bennett D. Hill, St. Anselm's Abbey, Washington, D.C.

    I Also Recommend:

    Fantastic book

This book may be the best and easiest read on the subject. The author has restrained her editorial impulses and presents a reasonably well straightforward, objective assessment of the period. I appreciate her writing and story telling skills which were self-evident in this book. This is a book which should be maintained as available for some time to come. It might well be the best book on the subject today. It is very easy to read and I promise you, you will not want to put it down once you have started it. She covers the Merovingian period very well withou taveling to kick their corpses or hurl evil invectives against them. I loved the book. I may loan it to select friends to read but it will always be returned to my shelf for safekeeping. This book is Dy-no-mite. It is extremely enlightening, original, and balanced and it is very enlightening, thought provoling, touching, thrilling, and absorbing. It is an absolute inspiration to anyone who reads it. I recommend this book very, very highly to all who would read or study the period.
