Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
David and his older sister Sally go to their grandparents' mountain home for David's seventh birthday. There's lots of excitement in the forests and streams around the old wooden house, but David's too lost in his book to notice any of it. The gentle adventures of real life are nothing compared with the fictional adventure that David's having through his reading. There are a couple of "messages" here-potentially conflicting ones about reading and real life. But the real draw here is that it's an easy-to-read book that features reading, grandparents, and the simple life all in a positive light!

PreS-Gr 3-This short story revolves around David and Sally's trip to the mountains where they visit their grandparents. In a throwback to old-fashioned living, Grandpa makes fishing rods for the children in his workshop while Granny sets up a tent and bakes a birthday cake for David. The kids fish and play at being Indians, the first of many references to Indian life. Tension arises when a bear comes into camp and eats David's cake, set out on a table under which David is reading. Sally and Granny watch with wide-eyed apprehension, but luckily, David is so engrossed in his book that he doesn't stir. Sometimes reading "can even save your life." The threat of the bear is diminished through the cartoon-style, earthtone illustrations that depict a shaggy, friendly faced creature. It lumbers up to the table, demolishes the cake, then good naturedly ambles away. Everything ties together when Grandpa hands David a freshly caught fish, "a real Blackfoot Indian birthday present." A light, easy-going tale for early readers.-Martha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI
