Gr 5-9In the Farley tradition, the plot gallops off to a dramatic startthe Black and jockey Alec Ramsay win a race that leaves two challengers dead. The Black begins to spook at shadows on the ground, so Alec consults Wes, a movie horse trainer. At the movie ranch, he and his horse become involved in a mystery involving sabotage on the set. Plenty of action scenes and the glamour of the film industry will involve readers of this long-lasting series. Steven Farley, son of the prolific Walter, debuts with this title (the pair co-authored The Young Black Stallion [Random, 1989]). His simple writing style and fast-moving plot will satisfy those who've devoured previous adventures of the Black and his clan. (And yes, Alec does help his horse to conquer fear of shadows).Charlene Strickland, formerly at Albuquerque Public Library, NM

The Black Stallion's Shadow is okay if you're eight years old and have never read the original series. Steve Farley has brought down the level of maturity and content of the of the Black Stallion series. My suggestion is to stop reading at the Young Black Stallion and skip Steve's books if you are use to his father Walter's writing.

This was an awsome book, and I thought it was awsome! I read Walter Farley's Black Stallion books, and noticed the difference between them, but they were awsome!

She flicks her ear. What was that sound? It was almost like a small animal had stepped on a twig... she takes a step forward and smells the air. 'Hmm... is that... a hare? It seems like there's more than one here...' she thinks. She looks around and spots her prey. A hare with five smaller hares... she crouches and takes a step forward... the mother twitches her ear and looks up. Shiningshadow stops and holds her breath. The mother hare flick her ear again and turns back to her babies. Shiningshadow continues to move toward the prey. She gets closer... and pounces. Her claws hold the mother hare, and Shiningshadow bites it's neck. She lets go of her fresh-kill and turns to the five babies, who are a looking at her, not knowing what to do. Shiningshadow quickly catches the small hares and picks up all of them, then leaves.

He gets up. Looking in the water he finds a weird reflection. His lower jaw is twisted side ways. 'Im hidious. Skystep will never like me!' At that Skystep birst throigh a bush. Her swollen belly was swaying. Skystep helted panting on the bank. She stared at Streamshade. He knew he must look weird. His jaw was twisted his back leg was off the ground and his fur was dripping and clumped. "Streamshade!" Skystep cried. She jumped onto a rock and landed clumsly. Her belly full with unborn kits swayed and she tilted. He flicked his tail motioning for her to sty their. His jaw hurt to much to talk. With Sunflowers help (sorry if thats wrong i am not good with names.)he made it to the bank. Once their he licked Skysteps ear. With Skystep leaning on him they walked slowly back to camp. -Streamshade and Skystep

*she dashes in, having heard Jaypaw's cries from camp. Her eyes widen when she sees the fox, then turns her gaze to Jaypaw. She pads slowly over and drapes her tail over the young apprentice's shoulder comfortingly, letting Jaypaw rest her head against her shoulder* "It's okay. Everything's going to be okay. Come on, let's get you back to camp." ~Comforting Whitefoot
