'The Black West in Story and Song' is a well-researched, delightfully presented, and thought-provoking account of a fascinating but generally ignored aspect of American history. Anyone, of any race, who yearns for a more complete story of the West should buy, read, and share this book.

What a shame that Jesse James has become such a folk hero that vistors from others countries have heard of him, but not the black explorers, soldiers, cowboys, and settlers who played such a large role in settling the West. Michael Patrick, Cecil Williams, and Keith Conaway have done a great job bringing this information all together into one volume.

With biographical essays by Michael Patrick, lyrics and music by Cecil Williams, and illustrations by Keith Conaway, 'The Black West in Story and Song' provides new and important information relating to an aspect of American history long neglected in a format that will charm, inform, and intrigue readers. Text, image, and song combine to provide the life stories of black explorers, outlaws, and lawmen cavalrymen, foot soldiers, and scouts cowboys, ranchers, and riders as well as town founders, townspeople, and homesteaders.

'The Black West in Story and Song' explores the contributions of African-Americans in the making of the West by presenting twenty individuals who achieved either fame of notoriety during their lifetimes. The book makes a neglected part of history accessible to everyone. The authors do not shirk from presenting the murderous outlaw gangs, but also presents the heroic and noble people who did their jobs with honor and dignity. This book makes us aware of how narrowly focused most of American history is. It is not only about Black Americans in the West. It is also about the restless energy that enabled the United States to develop into the country it is today.

If you are interested in American history, specifically the Old West, this is a book you want to read. It will give you a new perspective on how the West was really won, who was involved, and what it cost. I couldn't put it down until I read it cover to cover.
