Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sally J. K. Davies
Monica, BB, and Kev1n are best friends. The three twelve year olds are all stuck at a horrible camp on the outskirts of New York City, sweltering in the summer humidity. Monica, the musical genius, is unable to practice her violin properly. BB is brilliant with computers. He is unhappy because there is no coverage for a signal to retrieve his XP3 messages. Their friend Kev1n is both athletic and a whiz at solving physics problems. By strange chance, a message does get through on BB's XP3. Newt Lizard, a boy in their class, sends a cryptic message for help. So the three friends escape from camp and head to the city. They get involved in an amazing adventure as the power goes out in New York City. The three must trek their way in the chaos of the wild city streets to find Newt and save the inhabitants of New York City. Soon the three twelve-year-old heroes will be known as the Blackout Gang. Fast paced and full of action, this story has lots of tension and excitement with many plot twists and turns.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Three 12-year-old friends are at summer camp, north of New York City. Unfortunately, Monica finds it impossible to practice her violin, and BB can't get a signal to work on his computer. Kevin is reasonably happy because his strength happens to be physical, and he can outrun or outplay anyone else in camp. Their plan to escape back to the city for one night becomes urgent when a scratchy message comes in on BB's cell phone from Newt Lizzard, a classmate whose father is a billionaire. He's in serious danger, and he needs help fast. Once the three friends get to the city, they not only have to find Newt, but they must also deal with a citywide blackout. The kids pool their talents to locate Newt and discover what diabolical mind is behind the disappearance of their parents, the blackout, and the attack on Newt. Readers will enjoy this fast-paced mystery with three likable protagonists. The specialized skills of the young people will attract kids who have a talent that makes them stand out, and Kevin's physical prowess adds a twist to the normal "geeky" detective squad. This is definitely a book for reluctant readers as there is always some excitement around the corner. The ending wraps up far too conveniently, but the ride there will satisfy most readers.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
