Overview

This low-budget horror flick about a band of college students out to document some strange goings-on in the woods has been the surprise indie hit of the year. In keeping with the movie's faux-documentary style, its soundtrack purports to be a "mix tape" found in the car stereo of one of the ill-fated filmmakers. The CD is a dark, twisting aural trip through the same horrific terrain the movie explores. Lydia Lunch's gravel-voiced requiem, "Gloomy Sunday," is a real gem, while PiL's repetitive, beat-driven "The Order of Death" evokes inescapable nightmare grooves. Creepy atmospherics and demonic moans in Skinny Puppy's "Draining Faces" slide back and forth into metallic, industrial beats, while Bauhaus adds a jangly apocalyptic pop song to the mix ("Kingdom's Coming"). Other highlights include the ominous "Don't Go to Sleep Without Me" by the Creatures; "God Is God", a death-metal romp by Laibach; and a bewitching murder groove from Meat Beat Manifesto ("She's Unreal") featuring the lyrical request "Give me love so that I can kill...." Overall, the album has the effect of a musical haunted house, with creaking doors, screams, otherworldly moans and voices all thrown in for ghastly effect -- a lot of fun, but perhaps not the kind of music you'd want to listen to alone in the dark.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Josh's Blair Witch Mix is a companion piece to the experimental horror movie The Blair Witch Project. Conceived as a mix tape made by Joshua Leonard, one of the three film students making the Blair Witch documentary, the album features fittingly dark songs by Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Lydia Lunch and the Afghan Whigs. As a bonus, the CD features exclusive footage that was not included in the final version of the movie.
