I love dystopian novels, and really enjoyed The Blemished. It was a quick and exciting read, it was able to keep my attention from beginning to end.
The story was engaging and had a lot of twist and turn that kept me on edge. There were some questions that popped up along the way that made me want to read more. There was plenty of action throughout the story which made sure it never dragged, and some heart wrenching moments that made you feel for some of the characters. The is not just a love triangle but a love square which adds tons of drama to the story. One thing I could not shake the entire time I was reading was how much the book reminded me of the Uglies series, that was kind of distracting.
The characters for the most part were pretty well rounded, some of them could have use a little more development. I hope to get to know some of the characters more in the future books. Mina was a great character, she's very strong willed and has a good head on her shoulders. Angela was a meek character that tries to stay under the radar, but she is stronger than she looks when it come to the people she cares about. Daniel is a natural born leader and very loyal to his friends. Sebastian, I couldn't quite figure out his deal through the story, but I hope there is more of him in the next book. Elena is the character I most hope returns in the next books as she seems like a complex character and I want to know more about her.
The ending left some open questions that makes me look forward to reading the rest of this series. Overall this was a great dystopian novel and an entertaining read.

Sarah Dalton certainly wastes no time in drawing boundaries! In the first chapter alone, we learn how severely GEMs and Blemished differ in society, we meet two intriguing characters outside the protagonist, and we’re tossed into the mystery surrounding the big secret Mina. It’s definitely a great setup to expectations of more excitement throughout the rest of the book.
I have grown very tired of the love triangle thing that a lot of authors tend to include, and this one adds in a fourth angle. The worst part is that a lot of it could probably have been solved by talking honestly with the right people. That being said, I like the direction it heads in later in the book. I know it’s part of a planned trilogy and will be continued, but I do feel like the ending was truncated. It felt incomplete and we’re still left with so many unanswered questions. Makes you expect a lot from the next installment.
In its entirety, the story was a fast and easy read. It flows well, but that majority of the story tugs on heart strings. I spent a great deal of my reading time sad, bordering on depressed, and almost in tears. There was one part that I did cry a boatload. So much to deal with so young. I doubt I could live in the world that Sarah has painted so vividly.
Emotionally charged, The Blemished is a powerful debut novel in which kids grow up far too fast and have the weight of the world on their shoulders. It’s a very different and intriguing world. Don’t miss out on this fresh YA novel!

I very much enjoyed reading The Blemished. Dystopian is one of my favorite genres, but this book is so much more than that. There’s a little bit of everything! Good guys, bad guys, action, magic and even a little adventure.
The story is well written and not “tired”. The pacing is fantastic! The romance was sweet and not too over the top. The characters were all quite believable and most have a good amount of dimension. I found myself very invested in Mina and her escape. This book is full of surprises and I enjoyed it If you like young adult dystopian so you will you.
Later there will be a review for The Vanished, but it made it to my personal TBR list! I can’t wait to read it!
I absolutely recommend this book for teens and adults.

This novel is extra scary simply because you can picture the events happening. Based on the storyline, it is so easy to see genetic engineering following this path that it makes you shudder. This leads to events and times that are completely heart wrenching. You can barely fathom the very real issues that these characters live with, yet they are brought to life so vividly that you feel for them. This realism combined with Dalton’s phenomenal storytelling creates a world that you feel completely immersed in yet never want to visit.
This novel was also very well written. Everything flows so seamlessly that you can immerse yourself completely in the storyline and characters. The world comes to live through Dalton’s descriptions of locales and settings. You can picture yourself walking through the various sections of the England that she has built for her story.
As unique as this novel was, the best part about it was the characters. Each and every one of the major characters is extremely well developed and loveable in their own way. You know who they are and where they came from. You can see the various trials and tribulations that they have been through to build them into the individuals that they are today. None of them have had easy lives. It is refreshing to read about something other than the upper strata of society. Yet at the same time, the author shows that they do not have carefree lives either.
This was a phenomenally well written first novel for an up and coming new author. It leads you into a world that you can get lost in while giving you something to hope for and believe in. Well done!
