Gr 4-6-An intriguing time-travel adventure. On a farm in Minnesota in 1940, Janis's father decides that her beloved pony must be put down because of its failing eyesight. Then, on her way home from school, Janis is lost in a fierce blizzard and must depend on the horse to lead her home safely. Meanwhile, modern sixth graders Warren and Betsy utilize the Instant Commuter device to travel back in time to observe the 1940 Armistice Day snowstorm as research for a school assignment. Their machine can access any time or place, but is not always reliable. The two story lines come together in the middle of the blizzard as the time travelers risk their chance of return to rescue Janis's little sister, who has wandered out alone into the storm. The book maintains a high level of suspense throughout, and the two plot threads are seamlessly woven together. The historical aspect is particularly well developed. The blizzard scenes are described with chilling accuracy and the characters' emotional reactions are both realistic and moving.-Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

On November 11, 1940, Janis Huff is reluctant to leave her Minnesota farmhouse for school because she fears that in her absence her father will shoot her beloved old horse, Pansy, who has become blind and can no longer work off the cost of her feed. Janis goes, but school is dismissed early because of a rapidly approaching snowstorm. She sets off for home in what soon becomes a raging blizzard, and ends up hopelessly lost. Meanwhile Mr. Huff has tried to round up his 40 head of cattleþthe family's livelihoodþbut can rescue only 15 before he has to return to the farmhouse, exhausted and nearly frozen. Other rescues efforts ensue; while all this is happening, two kids living in the 1990s decide to use an "Instant Commuter" to travel back through time to that fateful day, hoping for a firsthand report on the blizzard. They land on the Huff farm just as the blizzard reaches its full intensity, and their jaunt becomes a struggle for survival. The time-travel angle is sheer silliness, but Kehret admirably pulls several threads of suspense into a coherent whole; the blizzard becomes a magnificent star in this old-fashioned, surprisingly gripping tale. What you are about to read is about an eye popping, spine tingling book. It's about a girl named Janis who is in school and it starts snowing and it turns into a blizzard. Kids are going home and she starts off good but she starts getting tired after awhile and she drops and she struggles and falls asleep but after an hour she wakes up and her blind horse named Pansy is there. She grabes the raines and lets the hores drag her. Doesn't that sound good?

The book 'The Blizzard Disaster' was about two kids - Warrena and Betsy who have created a machine to go back in time to 1940 to research the blizard of 1940 for a report they need for school. Mean while in the past, Janis Huff and her sister Ellie are at home on the farm and when the blizard strikes. When four-year-old Ellie runs out of the house to do something, she gets lost in the storm. When Betsy and Warren go into the storm, the maching that transports them back to where they live freezes up because of the cold and thats when they find Ellie, who is lost in the blizard. The machine can only transport two people back and with Ellie, there is now three! How will they get back? I liked the book because it was very exciting and i always wanted to keep reading it because more and more interesting thing kept happing in each page!
