Overview

Botanical author-artist Dowden introduces readers to unfamiliar flowers & fruits of our countrys trees — such as sycamore, oak, elm, & maple which are flowering plants as truly as a buttercup, with the same parts that serve the same purpose. Her lucid text & meticulous illustrations provide a wealth of information about the role of trees, their growing cycles, pollenizing agents, & the seven major forest regions of the U.S. With so many of our life-sustaining forests threatened, this book will inspire a new generation of readers to appreciate & preserve these precious resources. An NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Anne Ophelia Dowden's poetically titled The Blossom on the Bow: A Book of Trees is a coherent explanation of the way trees grow with a focus on the seven forest regions of the United States, including a list of the common trees found in each: The northeastern forest, with more than 300 species of wild trees, reigns supreme. Her watercolors of representative tree leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds reveal details hard to capture with photography.

I got this book as a Christmas present a long, long time ago ('95 - seems like a while anyway) and I never actually got around to reading it. I never really could get past the beautiful illustrations! I finally sucked it up and read the text, though. Turns out - it was a very informative book.
