Taking each letter of the alphabet in turn, and with a wonderful fresh eye and delicate accuracy, Brian Patten evokes images of the many natural wonders about us, from the creatures who swim in the depths of the oceans, to the heavens above us and the galaxies beyond.

In exquisite detail Sian Bailey has illustrated each letter, while every verse is interpreted by ten of the most celebrated and best-loved illustrators of our time.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
The blue and green earth floats in space like Noah's Ark, adrift in the dark, fragile and beautiful. So we are reminded, and admonished to take care of this home of ours. The sub-title is "An Alphabet for Planet Earth." Illuminated letters adorn the top of every second page, followed by poetic images of things beginning with that letter. The illustrations are by various artists, giving a visual texture that keeps changing. Some of the text might be a little disturbing to young children, such as in the letter V page, "V...for the vampire-bat hovering over the sleeping man, lapping blood as gently as a kitten laps milk," or in the last verse, which reads, "Z...is for zero, for the futures we will not have, for the nothing we will become unless we cherish the blue and green Ark." There is a subtle tension created between the soft colors of the illustrations and the text, which has a hard edge at times. The glossary in the back is a little unfocussed. Still, all in all, this is a pretty book, with a worthy intent.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-First the good news. The artwork by 11 illustrators is striking and evocative. The bad news is that Patten's poetic musings are pretentious and unworthy of their visual company. The book is structured around the concept of the Earth as ark, incorporating motifs and ideas from the Noah story. While several pictures include the ark or related symbols such as the dove, the phrase "the blue and green Ark adrift in the dark" is tediously repeated throughout. The short reflections appear in alphabetical order, but abstract letter-concept connections such as "Utopias unattained" or "Beginning" will be inaccessible to young readers. The appended glossary, prefaced with the remark, "There are lots more things to spot if you look closely," includes some interesting information, but provides more bafflement- the B entry consists of the word "Breath," another abstract idea. Adults, particularly those sharing the author's ecological fervor, might appreciate the book for its outstanding visuals. However, its child appeal is limited.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
