Overview

“It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”
― L.M. Montgomery

The Blue Castle is a 1926 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, best known for her novel Anne of Green Gables (1908).

The story takes place in the early 1920s in the fictional town of Deerwood, located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. Deerwood is based on Bala, Ontario, which Montgomery visited in 1922. Maps of the two towns show similarities.

This novel is considered one of L.M. Montgomery's few adult works of fiction, along with A Tangled Web, and is the only book she wrote that is entirely set outside of Prince Edward Island. It has grown in popularity since being republished in 1990. The book was adapted for the stage twice; in 1982 it was made into a successful Polish musical and ten years later Canadian playwright Hank Stinson authored another version, The Blue Castle: A Musical Love Story.

Editorial Reviews

NY Times - James Bryor
Anyone who thinks L.M. Montgomery is just a children's author should read this book. Although it's appropriate for younger ages and its reading level may not be very demanding, I think adults would appreciate the wit and insights in this novel more than younger readers might. I discovered The Blue Castle at 25, at a time when I wasn't all that interested in adolescent literature. Reading it felt like discovering a long-lost friend. Montgomery's best novel!

Meet the Author

Lucy Maud Montgomery CBE, (always called "Maud" by family and friends) and publicly known as L. M. Montgomery, (November 30, 1874–April 24, 1942) was a Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908.
Once published, Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success. The central character, Anne, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. The novels became the basis for the highly acclaimed 1985 CBC television miniseries, Anne of Green Gables and several other television movies and programs, including Road to Avonlea, which ran in Canada and the U.S. from 1990-1996.

One of the Best Written Clean Romances of our time!

This is a book that I have read many times and have given away numerous copies of. For the romantic it comes through with sentimental colors and for the champion of the underdog it brings a sense of justice. It has drawn my daughter and I together in ways I cannot begin to imagine. Each of us identifying in some way with Valancy. If you want a book that you cannot put down then read this book. Encourage your daughters, moms, aunts, cousins and friends to do the same. You will not regret it and they will thank you for sharing such a great piece of literature. Then share your common interest and likes and dislikes and what you can apply from it to your own lives.

Beautifully written, this is easily my favorite book.

I stumbled upon this book when I was eight and fell in love with Valancy and her life. Twelve years later (with numerous rereadings over those years!) this book is still my favorite of all time, and as an avid book reader, that's a feat. The book is full of romance, and shows how one girl blossoms into an independent woman.

This is a very interesting story that takes place in the early 1

This is a very interesting story that takes place in the early 1900's. It's about a spinster who's all of 29 and her life raised in an extremely repressed and controlled family. Not just immediate family but extended as well. Something happens to make her want to change her life and the story is about her adventure of life outside her upbringing. Very sweet romance. And a happily ever after. Very clean. About 150 pages.
