Not to say that Mayall's Bluesbreaker recordings are disappointing. Far from it however, The Blues Alone stands alone as Mayall's signature work. Here you have a unified vision and performance of the blues, without the ego-based scramble for dominance inherent in Bluesbreaker recordings. Haunting, personal, amazing. The Blues Alone builds and builds to a fitting climax with Please Don't Kick Me (When I'm Down). After 30 years, I still feel the angst of Broken Wings. And Mayall's famous harmonica defines the ties between the rails and blues in Catch That Train and Sonny Boy Blow. About Brown Sugar: the Stones song of that name doesn't have a clue when compared with Mayall's version. Enjoyable maybe, but NOT the blues. And if you begin to feel withdrawal after listening to The Blues Alone that's perfectly natural. Just ask your connection for some Blues From Laurel Canyon. Close to that perfect high, but a little of the ache will still be there...
