Overview
With the exception of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, no American television show of the 2010s has made better and more entertaining use of original songs than Bob's Burgers, the animated sitcom about the travails of the Belcher Family as they live their lives and struggle to keep their burger restaurant above water. The show's creator, Loren Bouchard, enjoys having his characters burst into song, and he and his music staff have written enough witty, engaging, and genuinely satisfying tunes for the show to fill two healthy albums that have been issued to the delight of the show's fans. 2022 saw the release of The Bob's Burgers Movie, a feature film that gave the characters a chance to tell a story on a larger and more elaborate scale than was possible in 30 minutes of prime-time TV, and predictably, The Bob's Burgers Movie (A Major Motion Burger Soundtrack) opens with three songs that play on a larger stage than anything on the TV series. "Sunny Side Up Summer" and "Lucky Ducks" are elaborate production numbers in the movie, and heard on this album, they give the voice actors a chance to shine with songs that help advance the narrative and focus the characters while also generating laughs, especially Kristen Schaal, who as Louise Belcher gets a major showpiece in both songs, and Eugene Mirman as Gene, who takes center stage in the grand finale "The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee/My Burger Buns." The arrangements also fill out the sound and style of the show's musical vignettes, especially in the whimsical use of woodwinds, brass, hand percussion, and low-budget keyboards. The three songs are good enough that you can't help but wish there were more of them, but the rest of The Bob's Burgers Movie (A Major Motion Burger Soundtrack) is taken up by Tim Davies' background score for the picture, with the exception of instrumental versions of "Sunny Side Up Summer" and "Lucky Ducks," handy for your next karaoke party. Since the film trades in drama and suspense almost as much as laughs, for the most part this sounds like a typical set of musical cues for a major motion picture, and while the music is well-crafted, like most movie soundtracks, it doesn't sound as vital when heard without the accompanying visuals. In short, The Bob's Burgers Movie (A Major Motion Burger Soundtrack) gives you three great songs and a bunch of glossy, high-quality filler, and it's hard not to wish the album had been enlivened with additional dialogue excerpts, or perhaps an extended dance remix of "The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee/My Burger Buns." Here's hoping the sequel is an opera. ~ Mark Deming
