Overview

James Blakely is a good man who has done some bad things in his time. So when he’s viciously gunned down in his sleep, he’s faced with a choice: proceed immediately to an afterlife of eternal damnation or haunt the world of the living in search of redemption — and one last shot at heaven.

Now little more than a flickering shade of the man he was, James spends his days seeking solace from the loved ones he left behind — even as he works furiously to unravel the mystery of his murder. Solving the crime and saving his soul will force James to confront the darkest secrets in his own past. And with his memories fading and his ghost body disintegrating, time is running out for him to save himself and leave this earthly plane.

The fires of hell are rising, but will they purify James Blakely’s tormented soul — or consume it?

Editorial Reviews

Julie Belmont
I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over--your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately. My favorite scene is the one of Jesus stepping down from the cross and then the passionate and compassionate way it was treated as he went back to the cross. I will relive that for a long time to come. You're a wonderfully descriptive writer.

    Amazing

Wow! J.R.Rain is a consistently fabulous writer. His books never cease to amaze with full 3 dimentional characters and wonderfully crafted stories. If you haven't read any of his works I recommend starting with the Samantha Moon Vampire for Hire series then branching out to his other stories. I promise you will be glad you did.

    Love J.R. Rain!

I became aware of J.R. Rain through a post from an online book forum. The post was complimenting his Vampire For Hire series and since I always enjoy good vampire novels, I decided to look into his work. I couldn't resisit The Body Departed's story line and I wasn't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. I fell in love with the characters... I laughed and I cried. Thank you J.R. Rain for a thought-provoking story. I have already purchased some of your other books.

A Paranormal Mystery that kept me guessing...

I enjoyed this book: the characters, the writing style, and the plot! Mr. Rain takes the reader on a journey through the main character's afterlife. It kept me wondering why the main character was stuck in the place where he found himself. It has the feel of the Sixth Sense in that you aren't entirely sure what is happening with the main character. J. R. Rain wrote the story in first person and therfore the reader figures out the situation at the same time as the main character does. It's a paranormal mystery!

My only criticism is that it was too short! I really wanted to read more. The Body Departed was a very tightly written story. One of the few books I've read that didn't have any glaring grammatical errors or typos. Kudos to J. R. Rain! I enjoyed his style so much, I bought The Lost Ark.
