Overview

Anyone who desperately wants to lose 10 to 50 or more pounds but just can't find the time to exercise three or four times a week will love The Body Fat Breakthrough. It requires just one or two 20-minute resistance-training workouts using negative (or eccentric) training, the little-known weight-lifting technique that shrinks fat cells and triggers fast muscle growth. Legendary fitness researcher Ellington Darden, PhD, put 115 overweight men and women on this workout program and achieved remarkable results, which are illustrated in the book through 20 inspiring before and after photographs. Some test subjects lost 30, 40, or even more than 50 pounds in as many days and transformed their bodies and their health.

Negative training is just one of 10 Fat Bombs demonstrated in the book. Others include:
  • A unique meal plan in which the bulk of calories come from carbohydrates (50% carbs; 25% protein; 25% fat), offering readers an appealing new way to lose weight without sacrifice
  • Drinking a gallon of cold water a day to stay full and hydrated, and to boost calorie burn through thermogenesis
  • Evening after-dinner walks to accelerate body heat, triggering increased fat loss
Dr. Darden's Breakthrough program sheds pounds fast while building and toning muscle in just 6 weeks.

Good program that works if you stick with it.

I am 3 weeks into the program and I have lost 13 pounds. I like the simple, easy to follow meal plan. I am busy and do not have time to prepare 6 special meals a day. And my family does not alway want eat to what I am suppose to eat.

I like the workout plan and the negative resistance. My body is getting harder and toning up. It is a common sense plan to nutrition and exercise. I am having the best success on this program compared to others. I would recommend

    Really more for men

Although the book has pictures of women, and lists their success stories, I had trouble with the upper body exercises because I'm not strong enough, and there were no alternatives given for those of us who can't do them. I am a very athletic older woman, playing both singles and doubles tennis up to 5 times per week, and doing gardening, which means hauling my own topsoil, but still couldn't do the initial exercises Fortunately my husband, a fitness freak, helped me figure out alternatives. Still, the book gave me some goals to push for.

    more from this reviewer

I received ARC to provide an honest review of this book. Well

I received ARC to provide an honest review of this book.

Well I am sorry to report that I did not lose 30 pounds in the 30 days, but I did lose some weight. I also feel like my muscle tone has improved. Nevertheless, feeling and looking better mean much more than any number to me. However, I have passed along this book title to a few friends and hope that they see the difference in the number since that is important to them.

The book was easy to follow and I am sure that I could have lost more if my family would have stuck to the meal plan…and maybe my willpower was greater. I will incorporate several of the exercise suggestions into my routine to keep everything fresh.

Darden know of what he writes

Ellington Darden is a prolific writer on the subject of weight training and fitness. He work led extensively with Arthur Jones, who developed the Nautilus machines. Just a brief bit about Jones.....he once told a story of a guy digging a hole at the beach with his bare hands. Somebody sees him and offers him a shovel and says it may help him do what he's trying to do. The guy digging with his bare hands looks at the guy with the shovel with hate in his eyes and digs harder and faster with his hands. But the guy at the beach is a bodybuilder, his hands were conventional training, and the shovel was Nautilus machines. As mentioned Darden worked with Jones for quite a while, also with the Mentzer brothers ( the current information on high intensity training is nothing new, they played a great part in it). In the Body Fat Breakthrough book Darden is calling for 'super slow' training and then some. Super slow emphasizes the negative part of a movement or in this case to work up to a 30-30-30 rep........ 30 seconds on the negative, 30 on the positive, and 30 again negative. It starts with 10-10 and you have to work to the 30s. In the book Darden takes you through quite a review of weight training and it's popularity in the 1980s. The workouts suggested are extremely demanding and equally beneficial. Darden does it again! Just do a search for him on this site and see how many books he has written.
