Overview

A war is coming, a battle that will stretch from the prehistoric forests of the ancient past to the cutting-edge research labs of today, all to reveal a true mystery buried deep within our DNA, a mystery that will leave readers changed forever . . .

In this groundbreaking masterpiece of ingenuity and intrigue that spans 50,000 years in human history, New York Times bestselling author James Rollins takes us to mankind’s next great leap.

But will it mark a new chapter in our development . . . or our extinction?

In the remote mountains of Croatia, an archaeologist makes a strange discovery:  a subterranean Catholic chapel, hidden for centuries, holds the bones of a Neanderthal woman. In the same cavern system, elaborate primitive paintings tell the story of an immense battle between tribes of Neanderthals and monstrous shadowy figures. Who is this mysterious enemy depicted in these ancient drawings and what do the paintings mean?

Before any answers could be made, the investigative team is attacked, while at the same time, a bloody assault is made upon a primate research center outside of Atlanta. How are these events connected? Who is behind these attacks?  The search for the truth will take Commander Gray Pierce of Sigma Force 50,000 years into the past. As he and Sigma trace the evolution of human intelligence to its true source, they will be plunged into a cataclysmic battle for the future of humanity that stretches across the globe . . . and beyond.

With the fate of our future at stake, Sigma embarks on its most harrowing odyssey ever—a breathtaking quest that will take them from ancient tunnels in Ecuador that span the breadth of South America to a millennia-old necropolis holding the bones of our ancestors. Along the way, revelations involving the lost continent of Atlantis will reveal true mysteries tied to mankind’s first steps on the moon. In the end, Gray Pierce and his team will face to their greatest threat: an ancient evil, resurrected by modern genetic science, strong enough to bring about the end of man’s dominance on this planet.

Only this time, Sigma will falter—and the world we know will change forever.

Rarely does a novel touch my heart to the point that I shed tears. This has got to be the best Rollins book I have ever read- and I have read them all. I hate that it had to end. Stephanie Clanahan

As I expected Rollins has given another nail biting, edge of your seat, thought provoking, must read in one night novel! With of course the best team around, Sigma Force! Love all the characters in this book and the research that this author puts into it every novel he writes. If you've never read a James Rollins book? You have no idea what your missing! Hats off again Mr. Rollins and thank you for an awesome read!

James Rollins never disappoints. The series just gets better and better. I can't wait to read what's next for Sigma.

One of his best so far but have to say the last chapters are a little disheartening as Kowalski is a favorite character of mine....

I've never read anything better than James Rollins book's. They are full of suspense, adventure and I enjoy the relationships between the characters. Once you pick up a Rollins book you can't stop reading until you're done. I also love the history infused in each of the books & the way you explain the truth and liberties you've taken at the end. My only complaint is that you don't have more books printed each year. But I'm sure all of your research takes a lot of time. Again, best author ever.

I have no adequate words for this book. It was so tense and gut-wrenching, I had to put it down from time to time to bring my heart rate down and wipe away my tears. Rollins is my favorite author. I have read all his books and short stories. I eagerly await his next book. They are full of adventure, great characters, and awesome information. You won't go wrong with any of his books!

This is part of The Sigma Series and is best read in order. The first book is Sandstorm. Again, Rollins does his magic. A wonderfully balanced blend of historical and science fact blended into the fictional world of Sigma. A perfect ride of adventure and action, flowing wonderfully with the characters old and new in this tale. The paper back edition has the bonus first chapter of the next book on the series, The Seventh Plague and the bonus short story, The Midnight watch. A hard to put down read, tends to garb the reader and not let go.

This is my least favorite of the Sigma Series. I didn't like the torture of animals and I also thought the plot just wasn't right.

This is the finest book in the series. This one, possibly due to the story line, grabbed my attention right from the start and never let go.

I chose this book due to it's rating, but I have to say it is one of the hardest books that I've ever had to make myself finish. I just found it very predictable, the characters were okay, actually the monkey was my favorite character and the plot was drawn out. I honestly didn't get into it until I was 60% through it. I know many people like this author, but I don't know if I want to read more of his books, if I want suspense there are many other authors whose writing I already know is sensational, this guy I would put under the heading of mediocre. I will add one caution for future readers, if you really dislike animal cruelty, put this one back on the shelf. Also, the ending was pathetic. There is nothing about this book that will make you feel very good.

Great! Again, the Sigma Force saves the day! And yes, this is what I've come to expect. More science and technology, with a bit of Dan Brown and conspiracy theory thrown in. Military style action adventure with a bit of Indiana Jones. Gray, Monk, Kowalski, and Seichan are all back in a story of DNA, signing gorillas, Neanderthals, and the evil Chinese army. I still love the author's writing and the series, one of my favorites, and will continue to read them when they come out.
