Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sometimes writers try to do too many things at one time with the result being that nothing really gets done. Sadly, that is the case with The Bone Race, a first novel written by science educator Steve Butz. Very loosely based upon historical events, The Bone Race traces the frenzied efforts of a series of professional and amateur paleontologists in 1871 who are on the hunt for fossils, fame and riches. Spurred on by the offer of $500,000 for the first person to present an intact dinosaur skeleton to the sponsor of a new museum in New York City, the characters in this action story set out on a frenetic search for fossils in locales all across America. Each of the characters encounters natural and manmade barriers to their dinosaur hunting that trigger a seemingly unending series of crisis and machinations. In the end, all loose ends of the tangled stories are tied up in the final pages of the book. Unfortunately the nature of not only the resolution of the multiple plot lines but also the narrative in general is both unrealistic and poorly written. The Bone Race suffers from many of the qualities often found in overzealous writing projects undertaken without adequate editing. The end result of these combined factors is a bloated plotline, unrealistic characters and a story that meanders over 350 pages without leaving an appreciable trace on the memory of the reader. By far the best feature of this book is the afterword wherein actual period scientists upon whom the story's characters were based are discussed in an interesting manner. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
