“Jean Brashear tugs on your heartstrings and won't let go." ~New York Times bestselling author Julia London

From New York Times bestselling Texas romance author Jean Brashear: a boxed set of the threepart serial, The Book Babes of Austin, including Texas Ties, Texas Troubles and Texas Together, another story in her popular Texas Heroes series

The Book Babes reading group began as five women wanting to talk books—but now they've become family. There's romance author Ava Sinclair, organizer and backbone; happilymarried mother of five Ellie Preston, the heart of the group; elegant art gallery owner Sylvie Everett; single mom and sociology professor Luisa Martinez; and ambitious attorney Laken Foster, the wild child of the bunch. For several years now, they've met monthly and discussed the current book a littleand dissected their lives and loves far more often.

But now change is rippling through the group, begun by Laken's restlessness with her freewheeling life of serial hookups and sent into hyperdrive by Ava's suddenlyhot career, while Luisa's abusive ex tries to reclaim their teenage son and Sylvie faces her mother's decline. But it's when Ellie takes her first step into life after her children fly the nest and falls under the spell of the sexy artist who's teaching her to paint that the group's orbit begins to wobble on its axis, and lifefor all of them and the men they lovewill never be the same.

And then there's the surprise Sweetgrass Springs connection...

Love her rural Texas settings and that her characters have depth and flaws, but unfortunately the stories in this series seemed choppy. This "trilogy" totals less than 250 pages, so consider this set a trio of novellas, so a bit pricy. Thought I was buying three full books. There's some familiarity due to overlapping characters with her other series. Unfortunately, I wanted to give up after 77 pages. I might have liked this more if she'd focussed more on a single story in each part. The first story has multiple plot lines: (1) Sylvie's breakup with super rich Gabe, who loves her but she doesn't want commitment and is dealing with her mother's Alzheimers. (2) Her kind and calming friend is suffering from empty nest syndrome, may be a talented painter, is happily married to carpenter Wyatt and devoted to their children, but being nurtured in her development of painting talents by a viking -god but socially awkward famous painter. (3) Romance writer Ava, with super sexy but loving radical lawyer-professor husband Tom, is dealing with the femme fatal young beautiful latina professor, and trying to help her friends through their respective crises. (4) Louisa is a recognized sociology professor, being guilted by her Catholic mother over the breakup of her marriage to abusive Ramon, who is engaging in a power struggle with her by enticing their son Carlitos/Carlos to move with him to California. Tom (Ava's husband) steps in as a father role model to offer Carlos some guidance. (5) Super partner in an entertainment firm (whose clients include Gabe), lives above a dance club in a seedy part of town and likes mindless sex with young men, encounters Michael, the traveling veternarian who is searching for his brother Ian (who at age 5 was abandonned by their mother). Just feels like the author is trying too hard to tie all these diverse characters together, instead of introducing each gradually while focussing on background, perspective, and development of a single relationship, its problems, issues, and resolutions.
