SELECTED FOR THE NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME BOOKSTORE IN 2012

Lose yourself in all the marvelous memories and hallowed history of America's national pastime. From the gloveless pioneers of the 1840s to the strife-ridden headlines of the 2000s, this comprehensive reference offers nearly 700 important baseball yarns, stats, and stories in a style as lively as the game itself. Praised by critics as “thoroughly enjoyable” (Booklist) and “instructive and fun” (USA Today) and even selected as required reading for a college course on baseball history, "The Book of Baseball Literacy" puts over a century and a half of legends and lore, right in your mitt.

Incredibly thorough, never dull, the book is organized in eight chapters:

- Players & Managers
- Executives, Media & Others
- Events & Dates
- Teams, Leagues & Other Groups
- Places
- Folklore, Literature & Diversions
- Records, Statistics & Awards
- Rules, Game Terms & Baseball Business

From simple terms like bunt and minor leagues to historical events like the American League war and the Black Sox scandal; from baseball’s great names like Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson to the men who subtly yet powerfully influenced the game like Ray Chapman and Marvin Miller; from .406 to “Tinker to Evers to Chance”; from the 1927 Yankees to the 2010 perfect games, "The Book of Baseball Literacy" will settle arguments and provoke them, answer questions and ask them. It's a must for veteran baseball fans — and a perfect way to catch up on baseball history for newcomers

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times
Arranged alphabetically in eight chapters, this neat book offers 'whaddayaknow' nuggets of wisdom on 800 topics including players, ballparks, and stats. It also tracks down the best baseball books, movies, folklore, and legends. Instructive and fun.
St. Paul Pioneer-Press
"The Book of Baseball Literacy" is a useful, 382-page volume that assembles a wide range of facts, details and statistics in an easily digestible and sometimes enjoyably opinionated style. Surprisingly, there is no other book so comprehensive, concise or readable... An excellent introduction to the game for a young fan, or a great space saver for the longtime fan with limited shelf space.
USA Today
A cross-referenced collection of facts, folklore and untold tales about key figures, events and institutions. Easy-to-find answers to the most common (and obscure but fascinating) baseball questions.
Wes Lukowsky Booklist
It's not so much the information that sets this effort above its considerable competition, it's the manner in which it is organized... This thoroughly enjoyable, eminently browsable volume should be part of every fan's spring-training regimen.

Meet the Author

In addition to writing "The Book of Baseball Literacy" and ebooks about baseball history and statistics, David Martinez has worked as a news reporter, college sports broadcaster, and advertising copywriter, but his biggest love has always been baseball. A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he reads extensively on the sport and owns an expansive baseball library. Among the significant moments in his life, he counts the day he met statistics guru Bill James at a book signing in Berkeley. A California native, he received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and he now makes his home in San Jose with his wife and two young children.

Made a baseball fan outta me!

I hated baseball. Yes, that's right - I dreaded the days my boyfriend would make me sit there and watch a whole game. What a waste of an afternoon! Well, not anymore! After reading this book, I can answer just about any question about the game or the players... and what history it has! This sport we all know as baseball is much more than just a game... it has truly helped to shape this nation and society as we know it today! I now have a new appreciation for baseball and I can't wait for next season! Go Yankees!

    What I Know

I've seen mountains. I've seen sunsets. I've seen babies being born. None of those were as beautiful as this book! I thought I was a baseball fan with a deep and broad base of knowledge. That was, until I read this book. This book taught this old dog a new trick or two about baseball. Not only is the content interesting - and from what I can tell, extremely unique - but the author crafts the content as if you were sitting at the park and enjoying the game and reminiscing with an old friend. It's hard to put this baby down!
