Gr 3-5-- Colum, a young boy who understands the language of birds, gains a wonderful repertoire of tales to tell. He is summoned by the king to become the royal storyteller, but finds the family unconsolable despite his best efforts to entertain them. He learns that three infant sons have been stolen by fairies. When Colum is turned into a dog, he rescues the young princes with the help of a wish-granting stick to foil the Fairy Queen. The irate queen's curse strips him of the magic that has held Colum dog-bound, and the boy returns home no longer able to interpret birdspeak. This original story set in Ireland ineffectively draws on traditional folktale motifs. The plot is linear, contrived, and basically dull. Wright's accompanying illustrations are darkly hued and textured, but uneven, flat, and dimensionless. --Maria B. Salvadore, District of Columbia Public Library
