Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rebecca Singer
As its subtitle indicates, this book is a collection of puzzles and games that are both entertaining and instructive. Produced by staff of the Exploratorium, a museum "of science, art, and human perception" in San Francisco, the book is designed to bring the excitement and adventure of learning at the Exploratorium into your own home. Divided into three major sections--the "Caverns of Memory," the "Forest of Hidden Surprises," and the "Puzzle House," the book challenges readers to explore the workings of their own minds and to learn about memory, perception, illusion and logic, among other things. From anagrams to optical illusions, this book contains a wealth of puzzles and brainteasers that challenge the reader and require the use of verbal, mathematical, and spatial skills. Both fun and educational, this book would make an excellent addition to any home or school library.
The Brain Explorer is an interesting supplementary book that would find a home in mathematics and science classrooms and in libraries in grades 5 through 12. Parents could use the book with their children for many hours of fun with the numerous puzzles and games. The volume is divided into three sections. The first details memory, how it works, and how to improve it. The only disagreement I have with the authors occurs in this section: I believe it is not a good idea to refer to activities that enhance memory as tricks; rather, it is better to call them what they really are—methods or techniques. The second section is about patterns, spatial relationships, and word games. It is challenging and contains many different games and illusions, any of which would be of interest. The third section is the puzzle house, which contains word games, toothpick puzzles, and mysteries to solve. The challenges in this section are the most difficult and would provide hours of intriguing activities. Even the appendices are worth the time it takes to read them. One appendix provides clues about how to become a good problem solver, and the other explains the working of the brain. In this volume, the folks at San Francisco's Exploratorium have put together a well-illustrated and challenging book. (a Science-at-Home Book.) Highly Recommended, Grades 5-12.
