Picture Book Perfect

nbsp;This is a sweet story of queer love and the constant presence of pumpkins adds some silliness to the text. I’ve read this with my Kindergartner and we both enjoy it a lot.

The story follows young Cedric's journey from pumpkin farmer to squire to knight. He ingeniously defies a fearsome dragon to rescue a prince and princess. The princess offers to wed Cedric, but his feelings are different! Cedric says, "There's someone else I love, and I believe we're meant to be. I'd like to wed the prince if he does feel the same for me." After the wedding and a happily-ever-after conclusion is a brief message from the United Nations Human Rights Office. The artwork is so mesmerising: the colours are bold and bright, and very entertaining for a young child to pay attention to. There is little text in the book, which would be easy enough for a young child just learning to read to follow along if read aloud. There’s also a gentle rhyme to the text that adds an extra dimension to the book, paired with a few humorous scenes.
