Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
You have a terrific writing style and have obviously done a lot of planning. Writing a believable historical novel is no small feat. Your prose is nicely written with details that capture the reader right from the start. Your plot is very engaging and allows your readers to interact with your characters. I always love it when I leave a story feeling like I know the characters. This is true of your prose. Your book reads like a movie in my mind. You have crafted a quality piece of writing.
From The Critics
Your book, The Breastplate, would make a good movie.

Meet the Author

Shirley McCracken is a freelance writer and poet. Always interested in the Civil War, she was intrigued when her husband found a relic from the war on their farm. The relic, a Union breastplate, lay undisturbed for years, but when the 150th anniversary of the war approached, she decided to write its story. She is a registered nurse, a wife, mother of two sons, and has two young grandsons who call her “Purple”. She enjoys being outdoors and has hiked, rafted, swam, scuba-dived, cross- country skied, even dog sledded. A horseman since her youth, she has ridden many miles on her Tennessee walking horses, Jazz and Jubilee.

    This is an excellent read!
The author takes you on a journey through the most turbulent time in our nation's history, the civil war. She has done her research and it shows! The historical detail is on track while the story keeps you engrossed with the lives of two generations leading up to and through the Civil War. The characters become your friends, and you are invested in the outcome of their plight. If you enjoy a good read without the "obligatory" bad language and raunchy content found in many books today, you will really enjoy this book! Thanks for the great book Mrs. McCracken!
