Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
In 1607 a group of adventurers landed in what would eventually be labeled Virginia and established the Jamestown settlement. Thirteen years later religious emigrants from England landed at Plymouth Rock in what would be Massachusetts and began the Pilgrim settlement of the northeastern portion of the American New World. Over time the British colonial presence in America would expand to thirteen crown colonies, each with a unique form of social structure, governance, and culture. Over nearly two centuries this string of colonies bordered on the west by mountains and seemingly endless tracts of forests, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, prospered. However, as Peter Benoit ably points out in this chapter in the illustrated "Cornerstones of Freedom" series, there were growing pains that ultimately disabled the rapport between colonials and their motherland. In The British Colonies in North America Benoit traces the history of colonial settlement, the evolution of slavery, conflicts with Native Americans, and the gradual splintering of English rule in the colonies. As with other books in the parent series, this particular publication is filled with fascinating information presented in a highly readable manner. Additional resources in the form of recommended readings and web links specifically connected to key concepts in the text all offer avenues for further study. For these reasons this is a valuable teaching tool that captures interesting information about Colonial America. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
