Avid Records, in an effort to act as the world's number one source of rare Glenn Miller recordings, presents The Broadcast Archives, Vol. 2. This double disc, covering most of the year 1939, includes 49 selections performed at the Paradise Restaurant in New York, the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, and the Meadowbrook in Cedar Grove, NJ. It just so happens that 1939 was an excellent year for Glenn Miller. Consequently, this compilation is packed with swinging instrumentals designed for dancing and cutting loose. The broadcast medium allowed the band to jam a little and stretch out beyond the usual studio recording limitation of three or three and a half minutes' duration. For this reason, "St. Louis Blues" swings for a full five minutes and "Blue Skies," "Tiger Rag," and "One O'Clock Jump" clock in around four minutes apiece. There are plenty of nice vocal tracks included here, but the real gems are about 15 or 20 fabulous dance tunes that make this particular section of the Avid Broadcast Archives extra special and well worth the price of admission.
