Overview

Seventeen-year-old Carrie Mathers can't escape the memory of the unspeakable abuse she endured at the hands of her disturbed and brutal uncle. She's tried to commit suicide three times, and the latest attempt has landed her in a hospital bed in a psychiatric ward. Hope for any sort of bright future has long disappeared for Carrie. All she wants is to die and escape the torment forever. But renowned New York psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Barnes is determined to keep her alive.

Dr. Barnes has his own unshakeable history. Years ago, a patient much like Carrie committed suicide under his care, throwing him into turmoil. After spiraling into alcoholism and losing his marriage and nearly his career, Barnes's life has finally stabilized. He swore never to treat any more abuse victims, but something about Carrie compels him to take her case. Barnes tries to put the pieces of Carrie's shattered psyche back together. With every session with Carrie, his confidence wavers, and his faith falters. One young woman has already lost her life due to his mistakes; the risk to Carrie's life and his own may be too great. But it just might be possible that Carrie is his second chance—and that he is hers.

An unforgettable novel of redemption and forgiveness, The Broken shows how our deepest hurts can become our greatest triumphs.

The lives of both Carrie and Sarah as well as Dr. Barnes is a very sad tale. The abuse at the hands of others and in Dr. Barnes case, his own hand is horrific. I would highly reccomend this story to all as lessons can be learned. Heartbreaking subject but very tastefully told. Dont look back Carrie or Dr. Barnes...

Awesome book!I had a hard time putting this book down. It's also a testimony of what supporting and counseling someone going through hell and back can truely do to their life when the only answer seems to be ending it all. I'm sure many abused people can relate to this since abuse is still happening all around us. There is also forgiveness that is unthinkable to many. I would recommend this book for a book club discussion and I'm sure there would be so many opinions on how someone else might handle what this girl went through.

I have been an avid reader for at least 25 years and this book made me smile, made me mad, and made me smile. If you are someone who loves reading (and not because you are bored), this is an excellent read.

this book is pretty awesome, I'm about 3/4 of the way through it, and I can barely put it down! I just have to know what happens to this girl. It's so terribly heartbreaking, but it pulls you in and you just HAVE to read it. I would definitely recommend this book.

I had to re read the first chapter of this book... more then once. When i first started reading it i just couldnt get into it.... and then the story caught me.... powerfully written, insightful, and yet slightly tradgic... the story of carrie leaves you breathless with her courage and compassion. I would definitely recommend this book.... while some of the content is graphic itis a true to life story of abuse, love, loss finding oneself and forgiveness. See for yourself... and enjoy!
