Review: Suspenseful, well written and a truly updated ghost story that fits modern times. In her second novel, Ms. Sloat, once again delvers an excellent read. Her main characters are well developed and plot line is excellent. The story was well revealed and the side characters were well written. They drew out her characters and plot, without overshadowing the main point. Ms. Sloat’s themes were eloquently woven together and she finished them off in an elegant bow. I look forward t more from Ms. Sloat and highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great ghost story to read over the summer.

*Copy provided in exchange for an honest review* This is the second book I read by Christy and I loved it! I've been wanting to read this ever since I saw the cover for it. I am in love with that house!! I am a lover of creepy houses and Christy told me her husband used to live there! I almost died. I absolutely love Christy's writing. The way she described the house and its surroundings made me fall in love even more than I already was!! I found myself wanting to crawl into the pages just to experience it all in person. I love stories that take place in small towns and this had it! The main character, Brylee, is likable from the start. I also related to her since she's from California but had to move to New Jersey. She's the most respectful daughter I have ever read about and I admired her character a lot. Now about the plot, the house is haunted by a cursed family and my heart went out to all of them. It was incredibly sad to read about what they went through. I loved the explanations Christy had for the paranormal phenomena happening in the house. The fact that she incorporated family trees in the beginning was super helpful too since I had the opportunity go back to them whenever I had a question. The way that the book left off was heart-breaking. The situation Brylee's going through is too sad for words. I just hope it all works out because my heart is breaking for her!! I seriously need to know what happens next!

This was a delicious ghost story. It had so many of the elements I love: spooky noises, things that go bump in the night, a little bit of love, and a wicked secret history that doesn't let spirits lie. Even better, rumor has it that this story is based on some real-life events. That always helps a story to ring true and definitely adds to the creepy factor. Characters grow in their relationships as secrets are slowly revealed. Brylee is attempting to reinvent herself in her new school and discovers she has a creepy talent. Her two neighbors and two other closest friends also go through tremendous transformations as their truths come to light. The conflicts start to resolve themselves and the story looks to be over. It could be over. This book could stand on its own. The way it ends, however, allows for the possibility for another installment. More secrets are still hidden and more souls need to be saved. The characters are going to be able to further challenge themselves. I would definitely read another book in this series and look forward to more works by Christy Sloat. This is not the kind of book that you read during the bright daylight. To get the full effect, you need to read it at night, preferably during a thunderstorm, in an old house, by yourself. That's what I did. I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Brown House is a fast, good read. The story is a modern day, teen centered, mix between Sixth Sense and Pet Sematary (without the gory horror -for me, anyway), and I found it very entertaining. The characters jump off the page and pull you in. I found myself carring about what happens to them and routing them on, which always speaks for the author's talents as a writer. Without saying too much and potentially spoiling the novel for someone who hasn't yet read it, I loved the twists the book took and the detail put into the history of the Brown family. My favorite character was 'the blue haired girl'. Her story touched my heart and I hope she makes an appearance in the second book. I can't wait for the story to continue.

Christy Sloat The Brown House The Visitors Series #1 Some secrets should never be revealed… After financial troubles, Brylee’s parents decide to move to New Jersey after her dad gets a job offer. Her first night in the new house, she has her first encounter – doors slamming and opening by themselves. After meeting her neighbour, Lynley, a little later her gorgeous brother, Ephraim, and the mysterious Kayla, she learns of the stories of the house, and it’s terrifying haunting past / curse. This book was out of my usual comfort zone, and I don’t normally tend to read ghost stories, but once I started reading I soon realised this book is something else completely. Yes its paranormal, but wasn’t chillingly scary (maybe a mild chill in a few places) and could be read by anyone. Incredibly well written, the characters and storyline had me gripped almost immediately. With so many twists and turns, the reader will be shocked by the ending, and left wanting so much more. In short, I loved it and couldn’t stop reading once I started. I now desperately need to know where the story is leading, and what’s in store for them all in the next instalment. I received an e-copy from the editor in exchange for an honest review.

This book grabbed my interest from the very beginning and did not let me out of its grasp until the very end. But still left me wanting more. I was not sure if I was going to like Brylee, the main character, or not. But she tends to grow on you through out the book. Her growing relationship with her neighbor, Ephraim, added just enough romance to the story as well. And Kayla, well... who would not want a friend like Kayla? Want to know why? Then pick up this book and find out for yourself! If you like a book with suspense, just a hint of romance, a haunted house feel, and twists, then "The Brown House" is the book for you. I get freaked out easily, so I did not read this book right before bed! There were some parts that made me jump, but I could not stop reading.

I was given this book to read for an honest review. This book starts with a family moving across the country, from California to New Jersey! They had to leave love ones to get a fresh start since the dad lost his job and everything was going downhill. The daughter, Brylee, hated leaving but was trying to have a good attitude about it. They got to their new home, mom, dad & Brylee, but Brylee was not at all impressed. It was a big old house. It was a 3 story house with a weird floor plan. Parts had no lighting, like one flight of stairs & one door did not open, to a corner bedroom on the second floor. Her dad said that many locksmiths had tried to open it with no avail. Her parents took the whole third floor, so she had her choice of rooms on the second. She tried 2 rooms, but was scared out of one when she woke and heard a door slam in the pitch black of night. Many things started to happen in that house that made Brylee scared. She met her neighbor, Lynley, who told her that there were scary stories about her house, The Brown House. Come to find out, her house was built and owned by the Brown family many years ago. They weren't physically around anymore, but a curse was put on their family and people did not ho near the house in case the Brown relatives ghosts were there. Brylee tried not to worry. Lynley took her over to her house and Brylee met her brother, Ephraim, who was a senior. Brylee almost immediately fell for him. They all became great friends and Ephraim asked her to the Fall Dance. Of course she said yes. Somany things were happening in her house that Brylee needed to tell someone. She thought she could trust Ephraim, so she told him. They worked together to find out the mysteries of the house and Brylee found out a special ability she had. The book was well written. It was scary at times, but the high school romance and happenings really made it a great read! Some things were foreshadowed which worked well with the story! Other things took me by surprise, a great ending to the story with a HUGE cliffhanger!!! I recommend this bookthe brown house

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely love scary stories, ones that keep you on your toes, trying to figure out what's going on, and this one definitely has the creepy factor. Christy has said the house used to be her husband's home growing up, and some of the experiences described in the book happened to him and his family. Whoa!!! I couldn't help but get engrossed in the story, especially the developing relationship between Ephraim and Brylee, as well as her friendship with Lynley. Then there would be parts that made me just want to scream at the book, throw it across the room, something, because that's how drawn into it I was. Oh, and I read it in one day, because I just couldn't put it down, THAT'S how great it is. Although, because of the ending, I'm on pins and needles waiting for more. I'm so glad my book club read this one this month, so awesome!! I'd highly recommend to anyone who likes supernatural stories, ghost stories, haunted houses, and the like. Fantastic!! 5 stars =)

I really enjoyed The Brown House by Christy Sloat. The atmosphere Ms. Sloat developed and the suspense she built in the book were wonderful. And there were definitely parts in the story that gave me chills. The main character, Brylee, was well developed and easy to relate to. Brylee's reaction to the move cross country from California to New Jersey and the feelings she experienced being the "new kid" in school were very realistic. And I loved seeing her friendships develop with Ephraim, Lyn, and Kayla. I didn't love the ending - maybe because I didn't want it to end...lol. But I am anxiously waiting for the next book in the series to be released so that I can continue on this journey with the characters.

I starting reading this book not sure what to expect, but then once I started I couldn't stop. It was awesome. I am totally into ghost stories and believe in hauntings so for me this book was so exciting. I wanted to be there right by their sides helping them out. Someday I would love to visit this house to see it for myself.

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review - I truly don’t want to give away too much, but Christy Sloat completely knocked one out of the park with her writing, the story line, the whole idea was just amazing. I could not put it down

The Brown House is so much more than a ghost story; it combines an endearing romance, a young woman's coming of age and marvels at the wonders of family and friendship. Christy Sloat's writing style is simplistically beautiful. It manages to capture the protagonist's inner turmoil and personality as she (Brylee) ventures through a journey of self-discovery and mystery. There is a powerful atmospheric charge throughout the entire novel that effectively keeps the reader gripped and wanting Brylee to succeed in her many endeavours. The narrative is superbly paced with the build-up tension successfully created, so much so, no doubt the reader will be listening out to creaks in their house and searching for a blanket to read under. The mysterious events and blossoming relationships evident in the book all come together satisfactorily, with a few significant twists along the way that will keep the reader second guessing. What was particularly successfully created was the ending. Christy Sloat certainly knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats and desperately waiting for more. An engaging and thoroughly entertaining read.

I absolutely loved reading Christy Sloat's The Brown House! Her characters are wonderfully fleshed out and realistic, even though I would consider this to be a paranormal book. The character of Brylee is hard not to love and Ephraim is hard not to fall for. If you're looking for a book that sucks you into the story, takes you on a ride, and never lets go, then this is the book for you! I would highly recommend that you check out The Brown House. It will leave you panting for more, as it did to me. I've got two thumbs WAY up, just in case you were wondering! :)

I had already heard some good things about The Brown House, so I decided to take a look! This book has thrills and chills! Brylee, the heroine of this wonderfully crafted tale, moves to New Jersey because of her father's job. Once they arrive strange things begin to happen in the house. She finds out from the girl next door that the house Brylee lives in is haunted. Caught in a whirlwind of spooky happenings, high school drama, and discovering she can talk to ghosts is almost more than one girl can handle. Along the way she teams up with some new friends to try and discover why the house is haunted and how to make it stop! The book keeps you guessing until the end! The Brown House by Christy Sloat is a fabulous tale reinvented by the author from stories passed down by her husband and his family. Mrs. Sloat expanded on these stories and weaved them into an intriguing tale of mystery, secrets and young love. The brown house is very real and is featured on the front cover of the novel. I can't wait to read the second installment in the Visitors Series.

A very well written ghost story. Brylee isn't happy about moving from California to New Jersey. Especially when things start happening in to old brown house they have moved to. Unable to explain the events going on the house, Brylee and her new friends start to unravel the secrets of the house and the "others" living there. Wanting to protect her family and friends, she overcomes her fears and tries to help the spirits that have been visiting her to move on. This was story has twists, turns, a few surprises and much more. If you like ghost stories, you will definitely want to pick this one up!
