The Buck Breaking Of Jupiter Williams
Jupiter Williams was once a free young man, filled with love, culture, and laughter. But in a single violent moment, he is ripped from his African village and thrust into the hellish depths of the transatlantic slave trade. Surviving the Middle Passage, he arrives on a South Carolina plantation where his captors aim to strip him of everything—his name, his heritage, his body, and his will.
But Jupiter is not alone.

Within the brutal confines of James Williams' plantation, a quiet rebellion brews. The enslaved whisper stories of resistance through songs, glances, and prayers. In the shadows, bonds are formed—some of solidarity, some of love. Among them, Jupiter finds connection not only in shared suffering, but in unexpected tenderness. The novel delicately weaves in Jupiter's same-gender love and longing, a radical act of identity in a world that deems his existence disposable.

When Jupiter becomes the target of a savage public punishment meant to shatter him—the infamous "buck breaking"—his silence becomes louder than any scream. It is the turning point that transforms quiet defiance into collective action. With strength born from shared trauma and queer resilience, Jupiter leads a daring escape that challenges the very foundations of slavery.

This is not just a story of bondage. It is a story of survival, resistance, forbidden love, and the undying power of identity.

The Buck Breaking of Jupiter Williams is a hauntingly poetic, brutally honest, and fiercely liberating novel that reclaims Black and queer voices from the margins of history—and brings their stories to the
forefront.

About the Author

Tai’Kirsten Johnson is a contemporary Black LGBTQ+ author whose work illuminates the complexities of identity, love, and resilience within the Black community. A graduate of Benedict College with a degree in History, Johnson masterfully weaves historical nuance into emotionally charged narratives that center the often-overlooked stories of Black gay men.
Their breakout novel, Four Shades of Now (2025), explores the intersecting lives of four young Black men in New Jersey, confronting themes of betrayal, addiction, love, and survival. Their children’s eBook, Captain Courage, showcases Johnson’s versatility by offering a touching, hopeful story for young readers facing life-altering challenges.
Driven by a commitment to amplify marginalized voices, Johnson’s writing challenges stereotypes and sparks vital conversations about healing, identity, and community. Through fiction that is as raw as it is tender, they continue to push the boundaries of representation in both adult and children’s literature.
When not writing, Tai’Kirsten Johnson advocates for social change, mentors emerging writers, and champions the power of storytelling as a tool for liberation.
