Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Back in the early 1980s, Marvel Comics introduced readers to Kitty Pryde, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl with the mutant power to walk through solid objects, who became the youngest member of Marvel's superhero team, the X-Men. Fans quickly fell in love with Kitty as they watched her grow from an insecure teenager into a capable young woman. Now, writer Fred Van Lente shows how this transformation took place in "Wolverine First Class," a comic book series about a young Kitty's time as the student of the X-Men's toughest member, Wolverine. When X-Men leader Professor X asks Wolverine to mentor Kitty, neither rookie nor veteran is thrilled about this "superhero internship." But the two must settle their differences when they are sent to find a lost mutant in a town full of people afflicted with a madness that makes them want to tear the two X-Men apart. Before the day is over, Kitty will realize how much she has to learn while Wolverine will form an attachment to his student that will define their relationship for years to come. Creating an All Ages comic starring Wolverine (who has been known to kill opponents with his Adamantium claws) is a challenge, but Van Lente and Di Vito manage this by emphasizing the developing friendship between Kitty and Wolverine and restricting Wolverine's claw attacks to property damage. Older fans may also want to read Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, a miniseries about Kitty and Wolverine's adventures in Japan, and Kitty Pryde: Shadow & Flame, a miniseries about a college-age Kitty's solo adventures. Both comics are available in trade paperbacks. Reviewer: Michael Jung
