My children do not have any allergies, so I wasn't sure how interested I'd be in a food allergy book. However, the illustrations were so adorable, I just had to pick it up and read. What a treat! I actually learned something and had fun reading it to boot.
This is a wonderful book to introduce my children to food allergies. They've heard of peanut allergies, but had no clue there were so many others. It's a great way to help them learn and perhaps understand friends'/classmates' restrictions in the future.
The overall focus on friendship over food is a great message regardless of whether or not your child has a food allergy. Food sometimes takes too much of center stage at parties, special occasions, and events. It's an enjoyable book with a thoughtful message.

As a concerned parent, as well as the co-chair of the Literary Committee at my children's school, I was looking for a picture book for the school library and the elementary classrooms regarding food allergies.
The BugaBees Friends with Food Allergies picture book has earned rave reviews from the Kindergarten and First Grade Teachers, as well as the school librarian. In addition to requesting the book for their classrooms, 3 of the teachers also purchased the book for their own children with food allergies, or to give to friends and relatives.
This book, with it's colorful and charming graphics, as well as the upbeat and affirming text, is a great resource to use when talking to children about the many food allergies that exist. This book can be used to introduce the topic in a simple way that allows a child to better understand what they, or their friends, may be facing with various types of food allergies. The 'talking points' section at the back of the book is really helpful to spur conversation and raise awareness of potentially 'dangerous' foods (per specific food allergy -- the book discusses 8 common allergies).
