Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Addressing readers, Kelly shares the story of an expectant mother’s “bump”: “She cherished that bump like she cherishes you,/ and the bump—like her love—grew and grew.” Allan’s ink-outlined cartoons in light, airy colors depict the mother as she views the ultrasound, picks out clothing for the baby, and gleefully skips to the hospital hand-in-hand with Dad. There are some oddities in both the rhymes and the plot (at one point, the bump helps the mother-to-be win a sandcastle competition), but it’s nonetheless a cheerful, reassuring window into life before Mom was Mom. Ages 3–up. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Jill Walton
This mom loves her kid and she wants to tell her small child how she felt when she first knew she was expecting a baby and how she celebrated the baby coming into the world. This mom tells her story beginning when she first noticed the bump and how the bump became you and her love and excitement for their adventure together kept growing. She talks to the baby personally, charting their development together from sonogram to birth. The illustrator's soft pastels are soothing, warm, and rather British. The mother wears dresses, she tries to knit. She posts extra-special name choices onto her bulletin board to consider: among them, Edna, Fatima, Wolfe, and Arnold. The comfortable scenery of ice cream parlor and sandy beaches make the story flow and feel cozy. This picture book will appeal to all ages of moms who remember the challenges and joys in carrying the bump. Small children will enjoy this reading but they may ask for green ice cream without the onion rings. Reviewer: Jill Walton

PreS—A mother tells her toddler a story about "someone you know and something that happened a few years ago." She explains in couplets the joys of her pregnancy and her adventures with her "bump," reiterating every so often "and the bump—like her love—grew and grew." At the end, the mother concludes: "And now you're walking on your own./Just look how big her love has grown!" Simple text and cheerful cartoon watercolor and ink illustrations create a warm, cozy book for one-on-one sharing. With joy and humor, the author conveys a sense of the mother's steadfast love for her child even before birth. An appealing slant on an oft-covered topic.—Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
Kirkus Reviews
Kelly and Allan marry their talents to produce a rather awkward title about growing maternal affection prior to a child's arrival. Most young children savor stories about when they were little, but this British import focuses on "your mommy before you met her." She seems surprised at being pregnant; initially she is a "bit scared, / very excited and not quite prepared." But, the refrain declares, "the bump--like her love--grew and grew." The mostly pastel illustrations, which appear to be executed in watercolor and ink, portray the future mother as an exuberant, pink-cheeked woman with squiggly yellow-and-orange hair. Readers will chuckle at her attempt to play hide and seek--her bump is quite visible sticking out from behind a tree--her need to buy a "humongous tent to wear" and her cravings for "green ice cream and onion rings." But the rhyming text is often forced and occasionally strains for scansion: "She hugged it and lugged it all across town. / She never once stopped and put that bump down." The artwork has appeal for preschoolers, but the concepts seem better suited for older children. While it may touch a parent's heart and be a welcome gift for an expectant mother, look for other titles that better celebrate a baby's entry into the world. (Picture book. 4-7)
