Editorial Reviews

VOYA, February 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 6) - Amy Fiske
The second book in Michelle Paver’s Gods and Monsters series drops readers right into the action once again. Readers meet up with reluctant hero Hylas just as a slaver abducts him. Back in the clutches of the Crows, his enemies from the first book, Hylas is forced down a copper mine on the island of Thalakrea. He must hide his true identity from the Crows, who believe him a key player in a prophecy that predicts their fall from power. Meanwhile, Pirra, daughter of a high priestess, is on the run from yet another unwanted arranged marriage and washes up on Thalakrea. Hylas escapes the mine, befriends a lion cub who proves a helpful companion, and reunites with Pirra. Together, they must stop the Crows, who have awakened and angered the gods in their grab for power. As in the first book, Hylas simply wants to find his lost sister and live a quiet life. Fate, however, has other plans for him. Paver keeps the plot moving with plenty of action. Beneath the action lie the central themes of complicated relationships, loyalty, and responsibility. All the main plot elements return from the first book, making the story feel a bit formulaic this time, but the characters grow and learn, loyalties are tested, and relationships deepen. Fans of the Gods and Warriors series will love The Burning Shadow, as well as other installments to follow. Reviewer: Amy Fiske; Ages 11 to 14.

Bronze Age Greece is a dangerous place, filled with angry spirits, vengeful warriors and uncertain alliances. Hylas, a young goatherd and Outsider, must navigate this mysterious world as he searches for his missing younger sister, Issi. Missing his friends, Pirra, the daughter of the High Priestess, and Spirit the dolphin, Hylas is once again alone in his quest (Gods and Warriors, 2012). His journey is cut short when he is snatched by slavers and forced to labor in the mines of Thalakrea, a volcanic island. Twelve-year-old Pirra's fate is no less suffocating: Her mother has once again promised her in marriage. Pirra bribes a seer to help her escape, but the old woman has other plans. Fate brings Pirra to Hylas' island prison, where they meet a spirit-touched lion cub. Together, they must confront the dangerous prophecy hanging over Hylas' life. This second volume is a vast improvement over the first. The historically accurate and opulent setting has receded, becoming the backdrop for the fast-paced adventure. Well-developed characters populate a time and place where the veil between the real world and the spiritual realm is thin. Maps and an author's note enrich the text. Well-crafted historical adventure. (Historical fantasy. 10-14)
