Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"Let them eat cake" has become the signature clarion call of award-winning cake-baker Anne Byrn, who has made it her mission to transform prepackaged cake ingredients into unforgettable desserts and snacks. In this release, she continues the good work begun in The Cake Mix Doctor by adding 160 fresh recipes for cakes, cupcakes, muffin, brownies, bars, and cookies. We dare you to resist the Chocolate Espresso Biscotti or The Best Red Velvet Cake. No need to feel guilty about all these pleasures.
Publishers Weekly
This volume isn't about artisanal baking nor does it pretend to be. And that won't bother the legions of devoted Cake Mix Doctor fans. Byrn's sixth book goes back to what made her famous: a whole lot of recipes for comforting cakes (plus some cookies and brownies) made easy thanks to the use of purchased cake mix and other supermarket ingredients. Readers are welcomed with thumbnail color photographs of all cakes in the book, with page numbers to enable quick flipping when a confection catches the eye. A hint-filled introduction, written in Byrn's friendly, collaborational prose, offers confidence even to kitchen neophytes. And then there are the recipes, 160 of them, many contributed by fans. They include lemonade chiffon layer cake with raspberry filling, made with yellow cake mix, frozen lemonade concentrate and raspberry pie filling; double coconut macadamia cake, featuring yellow or butter cake mix and vanilla instant pudding mix; chocolate-covered cherry cake, utilizing chocolate cake mix with pudding and cherry pie filling; and plenty more appealingly straightforward sweet treats. For those who want to have their mostly homemade cake and eat it, too, this book will become a go-to guide. (Oct.)
Library Journal
The author of the phenomenally successful Cake Mix Doctor is back with 160 new easy-to-follow recipes, 25 frostings, and recipe notes sections (beware of patron markings!). Recipes are organized into chapters like "Love Those Layers," "You're Your Own Wedding Cake" (which serves 45 guests), and "Frostings." A conversion table is also included. Byrn's fans will be lining up to check this title out. [20-city tour.]

The cakes are great - but the frostings, amazing!

I have tried about a dozen cake recipes from this book - I started with the bundt cakes because I had never attempted to make my own frostings and was a little nervous. I was thrilled with all the cake recipes - they all turned out just so moist and delicious. I recently got brave enough to try my hand at several of the frostings - I was amazed at how easy they actually were and how delicious. They are so much better than any store bought frosting I have ever tried - nothing but rave reviews from friends and family.

    I Also Recommend:

A Good Supplement to the Series

I have all the Cake Mix Doctor books and find them a good basic resource for cake recipes. However, while there was some repetition of recipes in the first two volumes, there seemed to be more repeats and "reworking" of previous recipes in this volume. As always, helpful hints and tips for a specific recipe are included, along with space in the margins for notes. Unfortunately, some of the more general tips are interspersed throughout the book, rather than in one section, which can make locating useful information time consuming. She does include a conversion and recipe modification section in the introduction, which should prove helpful, since the recipes tend to be categorized by pan size. Probably not recommended as a basic volume, but might be a nice addition for a baker wanting to broaden their cake horizons.

    The Cake Doctor Returns

I LOVE this book for making desserts and sweets with ease but looking like it took HOURS.... great for busy cooks that don't want the "usual cake, cookies, muffins, breads, etc". Each recipe starts with a boxed cake mix and then has added to it traditional kitchen ingredients to create a wonderful concotion that no one would believe started with a cake mix. I have used several of the cupcake recipes and even made cupcakes from some of the cake recipes. People have commented on the quality & difficulty of my baked items, as I smile knowing how simmple the recipes were. The Cake Doctor Returns is such a practical book and a must for anyone who bakes. I am getting one for my son and his future wife, they will LOVE it too!!

My wife check the book from the library. We both found the book easy to read, easy to follow the recipes and were impressed with the cake illustrations. I was so thrilled with the book that I purchased it for my wife. Of course I get the benefit

of eating the cakes using the wonderful recipes.

    I Also Recommend:

The Cake Mix Doctor Returns! -- a great addition to the cookbook collection of the serious baker and dedicated cake-maker.

Anne Byrn is the one to whom I turn when I am short on time and want to present a great looking, great tasting cake to my family or friends. As a regular baker/contributor to my community's household party circuit (we are a very social community and we do have many, many household parties), I depend on her to make my commitment to present birthday cakes, made at least monthly for my dear friends and neighbors, the hit of the party. The compliments keep coming. THANKS, Ms. Byrn!

    Great for the home baker

Really have enjoyed trying Anne's various takes on baking! Everything I have tried has been easy and turned out excellently. Definitely a good buy for a home baker that doesn't like to take the time to do everything from scratch.
