Children's Literature
In 1848 gold was discovered in California and sparked an ensuing migration to that state. The California "Gold Rush" brought tens of thousands of searchers for wealth to the rough-and-ready world of frontier California. Travelers to the gold fields of California arrived after a perilous sea or land journey that lasted approximately six months. Many perished en route of disease or in a violent manner. Once in California these "Forty-niners" found that gold mining was not only dangerous but also extremely hard work. Most of prospectors busted out and were forced to return home with little or nothing to show for their brutish labor. In a few cases riches were made and the mythology of the quick strike was supported. The California "Gold Rush" is the topic that the co-authors of this skeletal work tap into. Presented in a brief overview format The California Gold Rush is part of a broader American history series entitled "Events That Shaped America." Geared toward an elementary audience this work offers a reasonable starting point for the study of this aspect of American history. Readers with an eye for more detail and content should check out co-author Michael V. Uschan's book by the same title published by World Almanac Library as part of the "Landmark Events in American History" series. However, in this particular work, the authors have combined to develop an adequate look at a colorful chapter in the history of the American West. 2003, Gareth Stevens,
