About the Author

George Levine is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University, New Jersey. His previous publications include Reading Thomas Hardy (Cambridge, 2017), Darwin the Writer (2011), Lifebirds (1997) and as editor, The Cambridge Companion to George Eliot (Cambridge, 1st edition, 2001).

Nancy Henry is Professor of English and Distinguished Professor in Humanities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her previous publications include: The Life of George Eliot (2012), The Cambridge Introduction to George Eliot (Cambridge, 2008) and George Eliot and the British Empire (Cambridge, 2002).
