Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4 --This account of Columbus' journey and the canary mascot that accompanied him is seriously flawed, both as historical fiction and as a picture book. The pet of a poor cobbler who can no longer afford to feed him (that in itself is hard to accept), Carlos is purchased by Columbus. It is Carlos who flies ahead and sights land. Rewarded by Queen Isabella for his role in the adventure, he is set free to return to the cobbler with riches enough to live out their days in comfort. While the historical outline here is fairly accurate, the story lacks imagination. The meaning of some Spanish words sprinkled through the text is not always clear and the afterword raises more questions than it answers. Although the illustrations are adequate in depicting the period and setting, they are jarring and amateurish and, with a few exceptions, the color is either garish or muddy. The proliferation of new titles on Columbus, in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of his discoveries, has begun. As this is a subject area in which collections are already likely to be strong, any additions will have to be of the highest quality. This one isn't.-- Marie Orlando, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY
