Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
This picture book introduces young children to one of America's most important buildings, the Capitol. Colored photographs and drawings show the building as it looks today, as well as how it looked in the past. The book is divided into three sections that describe what the Capitol is, the history of its design and construction, and what kids can expect to see if they should visit. New readers will have no problems with the simple text and large type. They will probably enjoy learning about how long it took to build the Capitol and finding out about the many changes that have occurred in its design over the years. Text boxes add interesting information to the main text and provide captions for the pictures. Special features include a map of Washington, D.C., a page of fun facts, a glossary, an index, and a bibliography of both print and Internet sources. This is a good book for students writing reports as well as those interested in pleasure reading. It would work well for a Social Studies unit on government. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
