Not as great as I thought it would be...

I have been out of work for over a year now. I picked up this book just to see if there was another job I might be suited for. The book was an okay read but did not really help me.

Interesting frameworks and a great reference book

I just finished reading the Career Within You. The Enneagram, the personality tool used here is pretty interesting. There seems to be a lot of substance behind it and its connections between values and different personality traits. The down side to that depth is that understanding the complexity built in to each of the nine types seems to take several readings. Obviously not everything jived, but I enjoyed having the words reflect back who I am and connecting different pieces into a single box. Looking at the jobs that matched, I definitely have considered most of the ones that ranked highly. So overall, I am impressed by the framework used here. Since each section is relatively short, covering the gamut of job search topics, and the book does not repeat the same material much, it seems like the best way to use this book is as a frequent reference in the job search process.

    I Also Recommend:

A book that will help you identify your true career needs

Addressing one's career needs in post-industrial societies has, for many, become a difficult and, at times, highly stressful and demanding task. It has, indeed, become a job in itself. The range of career possibilities is so vast that someone seeking to define their career path can get extremely confused and feel unable to progress significantly with their career. One practical answer to this common dilemma lies in the identification of our unique set of personal talents and values, which can be unveiled through the study of one's personality type as offered to us by the Enneagram typology, the psychological instrument used by Elisabeth Wagele and Ingrid Stabb in "The Career Within You: How to Find the Perfect Job for Your Personality" (Harper Collins 2009).

By combining the wisdom of the Enneagram and its nine personality types with a detailed exploration of individual career needs, this book provides the reader with a useful personal and career development tool. The authors have produced a highly comprehensive, innovative guide for the person looking for the solution to what has become an existential problem. The search for that elusive job is no longer just about how to earn a living; it is made more complex, today, by our growing awareness that we each have something quite unique to contribute to the society and the era in which we live. For an increasing number of people, work has to be imbibed with meaning, and that meaning is determined by the individual's blend of qualities, abilities and the values which inform their moral stance on their own existence. This user-friendly, detailed and witty book responds precisely to that human need: it presents the reader with an accurate and insightful examination of individual strengths, the special criteria to be satisfied by a particular job role and their application to the world of work according to type. By including features such as the initial typing questionnaire and worksheets, plus case-studies and cartoons as illustrations of each personality type, Stabb and Wagele are promoting a fun and engaging process of learning that will appeal to a wide variety of readers.

Our career goals are closely and firmly associated with our need to achieve fulfilment and lead a more purposeful life. "The Career Within You", offers anyone looking for more than 'just a job', the opportunity to carry out a conscious and deliberate exercise in self-evaluation, which will enable them, in time, to realise their true potential through meaningful vocational experiences. This book is a welcome aid that, by addressing the reader's very personal needs, will no doubt make the job searching activity developmentally beneficial and refreshingly enlightening.
