To evade arrest, he wears the uniform of a dead German soldier he finds in the snow. But the dead German was a deserter, and when Grischa is recaptured he is sentenced to be shot. He struggles to establish his true identity, but will it save him?

Author Biography: Hugo Claus was born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1929, and his work has been translated into more than nine languages. He is Holland's most esteemed contemporary writer and has been a candidate for the Nobel Prize.
